A Magnificent Gangster/Crime Film
Casino tells the story of the mob's involvement in Vegas, the rise and fall and everything in between, through Sam "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro) and Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci). Casino is a magnificent gangster/crime film. The story in Casino is immersive and interesting; despite being 3 hours long, the film never feels like it drags on as it goes over many different events, from catching cheating gamblers to catching cheating wives. Although it does have some ultra-violent scenes (the clamps!), it generally relies on its authentic dialogue. The ending of the film is also great. The acting in this film is superb; Robert De Niro is amazing, Joe Pesci is brilliant, and Sharon Stone is magnificent; add on the rest of the supporting/minor roles that were also grade A, and you have an all-around excellent cast. The music in this film is also fitted perfectly, as with most of Scorsese films.I own the original Blu-ray of this film (not the 100th Universal Anniversary edition). It comes with one Blu-Ray disc, with the full length film and special features (including deleted scenes and special reports) packed in. The picture quality is definitely an upgrade from previous versions, although it's one par with other upgrades like "Taxi Driver" or "Blade Runner". Regardless, fans of the film should own the Blu-ray version of this classic.Overall, Casino is a brilliant crime drama with excellent performances. I highly recommend a purchase for everyone- fan of the genre or not.Casino has very strong violence and blood, some nudity and sex.

Right Back Where He Started
In our generation nobody can touch Scorsese when it comes to gangster films. "Casino" is one of his finest. When released it was criticized as a retread of "GoodFellows," but that's unfair. While there are similarities, the latter is more a character study, while "Casino" has an epic quality: the encapsulation of an era in Las Vegas's tawdry history that has come and gone. All of the lead actors—De Niro, Stone, and Pesci—generate believable, powerful, and unenviable characters that are right on the money. It's their intricate interplay that makes this movie hum. The supporting cast, which includes Don Rickles and Dick Smothers in dramatic parts, have little to do but do well what's given them. The music is a hodgepodge of everything from Bach to Mick Jagger and Hoagy Carmichael. The production values and cinematography match the subject's glitz. Scorsese's direction and Thelma Schoonmaker's editing are practically faultless. It's always a pleasure to be introduced to a movie with credits by Saul and Elaine Bass, who nail the tenor from the get-go. Two warnings: Even by Scorsese's standards, this is a very violent film. It was originally given the kiss-of-death NC-17 rating; the director reined himself in to slide it to an R. One can only wonder, with revulsion, what was left on the cutting-room floor. Finally, as befits an epic, this is a long movie. Be prepared for a long slide into hell with its protagonists.
