Good product
Old thermostat got stuck open after 16 years and 58,000 miles on this 2003 Chevrolet Malibu 3.1. Gates thermostat appears to be of good quality. Installation isn't bad as long as you use the special U-shaped wrench to get around the exhaust manifold (thanks, GM). Tip - I used a dab of silicone grease on the O-ring to hold the thermostat in place while I positioned the thermostat housing into place.

I wish it had fixed the problem...
Ok, I replaced the OEM thermostat with a Stant thermostat. the old thermostat was definitely bad, it wouldn't close but the car still got hot. Did you see the one star for "install"? This was a 3.4 GM product. Because of design, a normal 30 minute job of changing a thermostat is a 2 1/2 hour job on this vehicle! I got it changed out, problem was not fixed. I changed the working Stant thermostat for the Gates one (only took a couple of hours to change this time, I already had all the correct wrenches out and the skinned places on my knuckles patched up. Still no joy, problem turned out to be a blown head gasket. Did I mention it was a newer GM product? I don't think I could write a review on that engine without using curse words! But the good: This thermostat appeared to be much better quality than the Stant, which I have no complaints at all with. Thermostats are just made up of stamped metal, but Gates used mostly stainless steel, and the gasket was a truly precision part that fit in the opening and stayed there while you put the cover on. Yes, next time I need a thermostat on a vehicle I will probably buy a Gates.

It's New, Looks Good, Hopes It Lasts A Long Time
The original thermostat lasted 15 years, let's hope this new one will last at least that. The thermostat looks good and strong but the original one appears more robust, specifically, the Gates' cylinder is noticeably narrower than the OE by about 4mm, I hope this is due to advanced technology and not inferior cost cutting. The name Gates gives me hope. The first ride indicates that the coolant temperature is one tick below the medium range, which is normal temp.I mesured the dimensions of some of the other components and it is exactly as OE thermostat.
