I'm just begining to learn jazz drumming and this is the perfect book. It covers a variety of styles, comping, trading fours (solos), and has great practice tracks for all of it. The CD has all the songs with a full version and a drumless version to play along with.If you're looking for a music book for jazz standards, or a comprehensive lesson on a lot of jazz standards then you should look elsewhere. Good collection of songs to play along with. The CD has both a version with a reference drum track and then also one with everything but the drums. The reference track with drums are well played and a good educational tool. It's a little weird because a couple of the tracks don't have a reference, but that's not a big deal. Overall, I very much enjoy this product!!Be careful buying other drum/book play along CDs. There are a few that are sold as being for drummers, but don't actually have a track without drums to play along to. Do not buy the "articulate jazz musician for drums" or the "essential elements of jazz for drums". Those two books are scams in my opinion.

I'm only a little way into this book, but have already learned a whole lot.This is not something you go through and 'cherry pick' what you want. If you are determined to learn to play Jazz drums, you need to learn the vocabulary, just as with any language, or you won't be understood and be incapable of blending into the song in the way you should. And this means you need to take your time to learn this stuff.I've been playing forever, just not Jazz. Now I want to learn it to expand my knowledge and employability as a musician. I'm willing to invest the time necessary to learn this correctly the first time.I haven't listened to the CD yet. I'm trying to just learn the basics first. But there are accompanying tracks for you to play with - a serious necessity.I know the rest of this book will be equally as beneficial because it is, thus far, so well presented.

I bought it as an addition to John Riley's "The Art of Bop Drumming", so I could practice some jazz songs with drumless tracks - but I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the content! Great exercises make it a great well-rounded book and I find myself spending actually more time with this one (of course there are great things about both of these books!). Songs are introduced after relevant exercises, so you first learn some "topic" (like comping, setting up shots, trading fours, etc.), and then you have a chance to try it on some real material - great concept!

great book, now i have all that i need to undestand the jazz drums and songs to practice, very clear and usefull. the play alongs are perfect, very good players and the charts also very clear too. There are exercices to learn jazz drumming with drum variations, you can learn comping and soloing, nevermind your level, this book will help you.great!!!

I have been playing drums for over 30 years, and bought this book as part of my instruction to my 10 year old son. It is a GREAT book that boils it down to basics, with photos and CD tracks, and also gets into a good amount of detail that goes beyond beginner.I was looking for a book to prepare him for jazz band in reading charts, and this book has far exceeded my expectations.

This information and play along songs in this book are ideal for beginning jazz drummers.

Das Buch beinhaltete den Zugang zu Audio Tracks die über einen Code bei HAL Leonard abgerufen werden können. Das habe ich schon öfters gemacht und funktioniert einwandfrei.Der Code war aber nicht auffindbar, auch auf Nachfrage. Bei HAL Leonard direkt konnte ich Buch + Songs nicht mehr kaufen und wurde zu musicroom weitergeleitet. Ergebnis: Product not found.Ich habe zwar einen Nachlass von 30% von amazon anschließen akzeptiert, dem Kauf fehlt aber eine wesentliche Eigenschaft. Lieferung war o.k., deshalb noch ein Stern.
