Paint with the Impressionists: A step-by-step guide to their methods and materials for today's artists

Best impressionism instruction book available
Great book, I loved how detailed the information was. My only comment is the step by step instructions are not complete; they jump over several steps. It’s only for a amateur or experienced level painter, not a rookie beginner. They may get frustrated that the step by step is so brief. have bought 10 other books on Impressionism painting though and by far this was the best one for instructions. Highly recommended.

So far I love it
The book starts with a review of all the tools of the impressionists, including their canvases, brushes, paints, easels, etc. I am fascinated to read what they used and how they obtained their paints and how some are no longer available, but what approximates them. Which brushes were favored by which artists and for what reasons. The book is taking me some time to get through, but I am in no hurry. I went to an exhibit at Denver Art Museum several years ago of all the famous impressionist paintings and I was hooked. I got close enough to see some of the hairs from the brushes still in one of the paintings. A lot of history of impressionist painting is given here, and I love that. I'll check back in when I get to the painting part, understanding you cannot impart talent through a book. Love it so far.

This is a very useful book if you want to have instructions on copying ...
This is a very useful book if you want to have instructions on copying some impressionist works. He does talk about the history of impressionism, the artists and their techniques and materials, a lot of interesting information. I am giving it four stars because I think he could have chosen more of their popular paintings to copy, and they could have been larger or full-page prints. He also explains that he is painting like he thinks they did or reinterpreting their methods in his own style. There is nothing wrong with that, but it is his interpretation. But if you want an instruction book on painting in the impressionist style, this is very helpful.

Actually not a disappointment!
I honestly wasn't expecting too much since books of this nature are damn near "paint by numbers" with too much hand holding, but figured I'd give it a shot. This is actually an excellent book and covers a wide variety of mediums (pastels, pencils, acrylics an oils). The author also doesn't take the lazy route of reproducing one of the original impressionists paintings, but uses their techniques (or rather what he believes were their techniques) to create his own paintings and explains the hows and whys every step of the way. This is the first "Paint like the _____" that didn't make make me want to print up a return form and scream. Give it a try.

Great Book!
The book provides the reader with short descriptions of how the impressionists painted or may have painted some of their masterpieces. The materials used and the subject matter are described in detail. The only thing I wish it had was a bit more discussion of their brushstrokes and how those fit best with the materials. That would help a lot.

The author is not good enough at painting to show how to paint as an impressionist.
The beginning of the book was good. It had some history about the impressionists. For the second part of the book, where it was supposed to tell us how to paint like the impressionists, it was a total failure. The author does not paint like the impressionists, and in my opinion, doesn't even paint well. My work before reading this book looks much more like the impressionists' paintings than his does. It was a terrible disappointment because I was so wanting to learn more about how the impressionists painted.

Title says it all
This book doesn't beat about the bush - it attempts to show how a selected group of the most famous impressionists actually approached their work. Plus how you may be able - after practice - to emulate them. The first part of the book introduces us to the artists - Monet, Manet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Boudin, Cezanne etc and shows us their methods. Then the author demonstrates how you can envisage and execute landscapes, water scenes, still lives, figures and portraits in various styles with step by step full colour examples.I don't think you can expect more than this book delivers. It would be wonderful to be able to read a book and then paint like Renoir but at least these days we can cut corners and accelerate the aquisition of the skills that used to take ages.

This boom is good for an established painter
This boom is good for an established painter. I am not an established painter but a beginner and so did not find it contributing a lot to my learning. Something's like preparation is useful. Painting techniques are a bit vague for a beginner and not in detail. The author talks a lot about his feelings etc. May be the author needs to consider producing a book just for beginners and I am sure it would sell a lot. The book does NIR clearly say it is not recommended for beginners.

Disappointing if you want to learn impressionist methods
This book is in two parts. The first half is mainly art history and biography of the impressionists. It has some vague references to painting techniques they used. In the second half the author creates paintings step by step in the style of Monet, Renior etc using modern materials, but the results are not inspiring, in my opinion.
