Q: Is the portafilter holder removable?

Yes the metal part with the holder is removable. The plastic bin in the photo fits in its place for drip coffee. I had to grind down the top of the forks to get them to fit tightly and still fit the assembly in the grinder.

Q: Can you use this machine to grind beans only without making espresso?

Absolutely - it has macro grind settings from 1-10 and micro grind settings from A-W. I use ~2 when I grind for espresso and ~9 when I grind to make chemex. Works great for both and can switch between very easily!

Q: Does it have a battery backup?

No battery backup, but settings are retained with loss of power.
