This chess set is good value for the money. The board is sturdy and nice looking. The pieces are well made and feel solid. The magnets a strong enough to hold the pieces to the board, but not too strong. The compartment inside the board/case for holding the pieces is well constructed and it holds the pieces securely. In fact, if anything, it is a little hard to get them out because there is not a lot of finger room between the pieces and the edge of the case.I like that it comes with an extra set of kings and queens. Also, the carry bag is a nice touch, as it protects the board when storing the set.If I have any complaint, it is that the board doesn't sit *perfectly* flat when open. It is quite playable, but it would be perfect if the board sat completely flush with the table. I rate this a minor quibble as it's not bad at all. But it is one way it could be improved.

I bought this for my seven year old who has a new interest in chest. Very aesthetically pleasing and also user friendly with magnetic pieces. The self storing container is perfect and encourages him to place pieces back and store in storage bag for future use.

Good enough set, magnets are plenty strong, could play upside down if you wished to. The pieces aren't going anywhere. The pieces pack in pretty snugly in the case, I only have one piece that wants to come loose. (there are two extra Queens - good - and two extra Kings - nice, but a little weird - that will be loose when the board is closed)The board is 11.5" by 11.5", which is fine for playing, I would personally prefer it to be a bit smaller, say 10" by 10", since I mainly use this for analysis, but that's not a flaw. I knew this when I purchased. King is slightly under 2 and 1/4" tall. Pieces and board are all wood, and are well made enough. For light sets like this, I personally require them to be magnetic, otherwise pieces tend to get knocked all over the place with the slightest brush. As stated above, this set doesn't disappoint there, pieces are rock solid.If you're looking for a magnetic set this size, I can recommend this one. Mass produced, so quality control can vary, but It's a good buy for the price, and far better than cheap, plastic, non-magnetic sets.

This gift arrived in just 2 days. The magnetized pieces adhere securely to the surface and have felt bottoms that slide nicely. Our 12 yr old grandson belongs to a chess club at school and requested a set that would be easy to transport back and forth. This will be ideal as the pieces are secure within the foam, inside the box, that opens out to 11.5" X 11.5", is nice and flat, with small hinges that are not exposed. A bag is included to carry the set in, which will fit well inside a backpack. Even the cardboard box it comes in is so well made, and is only 12 1/4 x 6 1/8", weighs 2 lbs. total, and is good for storage. There was no damage and a card enclosed by Asney insures "replacement will be sent or full refund will be made without returning" should there be any problems. There sure is none with the set received. I highly recommend this.

I decided on the 12"x12" size (smaller than standard) to suit my summer playing needs on my patio's outdoor bistro table. Also decided on a magnetic set, for the same reason. This set came to day and I'm still smiling. The magnets are stronger than I expected--watch your pieces, they can easily clump together, creating a new sort of game. Good for outdoor playing, not obtrusive. The pieces feel fine, fit the board well, and the whole thing is a class act, of its kind. I love that the pieces can go inside the folded board (no probs with folding), for travel. Actually, this set gave me a little frisson of happiness when I saw it today. I was reminded of playing chess with my dad, as a little one. And I intend to teach my whip-smart grandchildren on this set, the next time I see them. If they don't take to chess, they'll find Grandma hunkered over her magnetic chess set, working out puzzles. It's been a while since I played, and that's all right. One negative note: I'd much prefer the board have notation, for teaching and puzzle purposes. This doesn't. I was unable to find a small-size set with chess notations. Weird absence of an essential chess-set feature, I think. Anyway, thanks for selling this petit bijou of a chess set at such a reasonable price.

Having spent a few days with this set, my initial impression is that it's perfect for a beginner like me. I was worried that the board might be too small, but as soon as I started using it those worries went away. I'm glad I took the advice posted on a forum to go with magnetic pieces for boards of this size. (This obviates issues like wobbly tables, unsteady hands, or fear of moving the board.) I contemplated getting a larger tournament-sized board with nice hand-crafted, weighted pieces—but I'm happy with my decision to go with this cheaper option instead. It appears to be built well enough that I imagine it will be with me for many years. Even if I do eventually upgrade for the sake of having something nicer, I think I'll probably keep it around.Pros:- Good quality.- Magnetic.- Carrying bag.- Extra queens and kings (one of each color).- Subjectively, I like the colors of the pieces and board.Cons:- The felt on the bottom of one piece seems like it could eventually fall off (a grim prospect for someone with an aversion to craft stores).- Extra kings and queens don't have a cutout. (They still fit inside the closed board but are free to move around.)- Minor imperfections where the board joints should meet up but don't.- One half of the board sits slightly higher than the other where they meet in the middle (by perhaps one millimeter).Overall I would call the craftsmanship "good" or "sufficient," but not "exquisite" as they do in their marketing material. (Naturally they can't say that, but I can.) But for the price I think it's just fine. I'm happy with it, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a chess board in this price range, with the exception of those who may need a tournament-sized board (i.e., students or club members).

Verschluss funktioniert, Scharnier ist passend eingearbeitet.Das Spiel wäre auch als Geschenk geeignet gewesen (kein Schrott, für den man sich schämen müsste), aber insgesamt ist die Verarbeitung natürlich sehr einfach gehalten und mit den teuren Versionen für 80-120 Euro nicht zu vergleichen.Das gilt besonders für die Figuren, die eher grob gestaltet sind. Die größeren Figuren stehen leicht schräg, einige Details sind unsauber ausgearbeitet. Die Filzaufkleber sind sehr dünn, aber ausreichend.Die Magnete halten die Figuren leicht auf dem Brett fest, aber sichern lediglich gegen leichte Wackler, nicht gegen feste Stösse. Da sich die Figuren sich beim Ziehen gegenseitig anziehen -was sehr nervig sein kann- bin ich froh, daß die Magnete nicht noch stärker sind.Geplanter Einsatzzweck: meiner Tochter das Spiel nahebringen und mit einem Freund gelegentlich im Café ein paar Partien absolvieren.Dafür ist das Spiel hervorragend geeignet. Insgesamt bin ich sehr zufrieden.
