Q: Whereabouts on the cord is the switch located (rough estimate of location on 15ft cord)? Closer to the lamp end or the plug in end?

More toward the plug end.. Maybe about 2 foot or so away from plug. I love mine! I have it hanging from the ceiling with a lamp shade on it and swagged over to the wall. The switch is just above the back of my couch.

Q: Can I use this with the light switch outlet or will it shut off every time power is cut off and need to be turned on manually?

If you are talking about a wall outlet controlled by a wall switch it will work. Leave the lamp in the on position, turn the lamp off and on with the wall switch.

Q: what shade can be used?

Well, I used one of those big white spherical paper lanterns. Don't know if this helps you.

Q: What is the diameter of the lip on the socket? i am trying to figure out if it works with the ikea nymo lampshade.

About 2", I am using it with an IKEA shade.
