The Disneyland theatrical effects of this prop-style fireplace help me relax and feel happy after a day's toil. To boot, those who mocked my purchase for it's cheesiness now frequently use it and express their satisfaction in it to me. THIS IS GREAT for what it is -- a "campy" (not to be punny;) eco-friendly way to create ambiance ... even makes me want to learn and pronounce French words correctly so I can tell people about it. And it's especially a significant bargain at Christmas-time, when everyone wants a fire. The HEAT it produces IS MINIMAL. You have to be right up on it to feel it, but it's as good as any other LITTLE space heater. Still, you can place your hands over it after coming in from a snowball fight and get a good warming that way as most of the heat seems to be projected upward (probably due to the fact that it's in the drafty fireplace). The heat's about as good as the embers of a couple of Duraflame logs, which it semi-realistically emulates. As Duraflames are about 25 bucks for a box of 9 at Costco, and this satisfies the emotional needs of my family in winter, it will pay for itself in a week or two of operation -- AND I CAN STILL BURN WOOD IN MY FIREPLACE WHEN I WANT TO. And I didn't have to install it. I just took it out of the box, set it in the fireplace, plugged it in, and used the remote control to power it up. NOTE: It doesn't look the same as the picture here. Really, you can only see the lower glowing logs in the dark space of the fireplace, and frankly, they aren't as well rendered as they could be. But they're certainly good enough. What's more is that it produces exceptional flame light effects only visible in darkness: A glass panel diffuses and refracts dancing flickering flame light all along the back bricks of the firebox, which reflects to the side walls of the fireplace VERY realistically. However, unless you have an outlet in your firebox, be prepared to either find a clever way to conceal the cord stretched out along your hearth over to the nearest outlet or get used to the sight of the black cord dangling out in front of you. In the dark it won't make a difference, but it might annoy your senses or trip you up during well lit hours. The icing on the cake is the remote control. I can turn it on and off and adjust the heat and flame light levels from the couch, so I never have to walk over and bend down to the unit to get it going. In short, it's not a replacement for the kinds of bonfires I like to get going to actually heat the den in the absence of the furnace, but it's a great mood and conversation piece with the added bonus of local personal heat if you're close to it.

My review is about six months late from when I purchased it, however, better late than never!With that said, this electric fireplace is absolutely WONDERFUL!!! I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my beautiful 85 year old mother, and boy was she thrilled!! She can actually have a "fire" in her fireplace again! She was like a little kid with a new toy, she had it on every night, especially if she was eating ice cream (something she always like to do in front of a roaring fire in the winter!), and again in the mornings while having her coffee and breakfast! She loves the remote because she can just sit at the table and press a button are two which makes it quite convenient for her since she is severally handicapped with Rheumatoid Arthritis.The flames are so very, very real like, even fooled some company she had over one time! It even produces quite a bit of heat, however she uses it primarily for the ambiance:)I looked at others online, but this was the one that looked most real to me, and it defiantly did not disappoint!! It fits perfectly in her old wood fireplace opening, she even keeps the glass fireplace door closed when not using the heat, which really makes it look like a good ole cozy fire on a good chilly night!!I highly recommend this electric insert. As a little girl of the 70's I remember watching the Christmas specials with the snow falling outside and everyone sitting in front of the fireplace singing Christmas carols by a roaring fire, hot chocolate in hand, Christmas stockings hanging from the mantle and the Christmas tree twinkling in the background but reality is that I am a Florida native and our Christmases here are usually very balmy so a fireplace is just out of place here. Nevertheless I have always wanted a fireplace that I could decorate for the holidays just like in all of those Christmas specials I watched as a child but I live in a rental home so building a real fireplace is out of the question so what was I to do? I chose to build a faux fireplace and just light it with some white Christmas lights or some other type of lights to give the illusion of a fire but without the right kind of light effect AND heat (who can have a fire without heat?!)it just wasn't what my heart yearned for so I kept searching for a more realistic effect until I came across a REAL fireplace with a electric fireplace insert from KW and even better it had heat. I was so excited about my find but I am a very choosy person when purchasing something I can't actually touch and examine so it took me 2 weeks to finally decide on which electric fireplace insert I wanted AND then make the jump to purchasing it so after 2 weeks and looking at pictures of every electric fireplace insert I could find online I finally chose the one with the most realistic effect and with heat. I am thrilled with my KW electric log set w/heater! Right now it is set up in my living room awaiting it's mantle(hubby isn't quite motivated lol) but even right out of the box this electric log set is beautiful and so easy to use. Just plug it in and turn it on. The remote is very simple to use with only 3 buttons, one for power, one for flame effect and one for heat and even better you can turn the heat off and just use the flame effect which I do every night! The only thing I wish it had is sound effects but I still love, love, love, my "fireplace" and I can't wait to get it all decorated for Christmas this year. It's going to be magical!

Use the fireplace every night for atmosphere. Nice to know that it has a heater as well, but don't really use that feature.

It makes noise and when you put it on higher heat it will make loud noise which at night it kind of bother you while you try to sleep
