Robust coverage of all five essential reading instruction components
According to the expert reviewers at the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), this textbook does a good job comprehensively addressing the five key components of early reading instruction (phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) for future elementary teachers. We recommend it! - Robust coverage of all five essential reading instruction components - Promotes direct, explicit instruction for struggling readers - Strong emphasis on phonics instructionNCTQ is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit research and policy organization that is committed to ensuring that every child has access to effective teachers and every teacher has the opportunity to become effective. Don't judge a book by it's cover!
There were too many notations and highlighting so much that I could not read several chapters. It looked great on the outside.

Great text for a quick analysis
This text gives step by step details on how to conduct a reading inventory. It is an ideal text for literacy teachers who are not familiar with how to proceed with this type of assessment. The information is easy to follow because it is not cluttered with a lot of technical jargon. It tests students' skills in word recognition, reading by analogy, fluency and comprehension. In each of these components it tells you where to begin testing, how to administer the test, how to score the test and how to interpret the scores. More importantly, it provides examples that guides you through the entire process. This a great book when you are required to assess a large group of students in a limited amount of time.

My top resource for reading interventions
This book details strategies to address various reading deficiencies. The explanations are clear and are backed by research by notable experts. What is most useful to me is the table in the back which is a quick reference for identifying which interventions are best for elementary, middle school, RtI, English Language Learners, etc. This was my Bible when handling secondary RtI. This should be on every reading interventionist's bookshelf.
