Superb book for 11+ preparation
Brilliant and challenging tasks contained herein and a useful asset in my daughter's preparation for her 11+. On first impressions, I believed this book was solely for my daughter, but the more I was involved in tutoring, the more I realised, I started to learn too. With over 500 Verbal reasoning practice exam questions divided into a variety of training sessions, this book poses a rigorous test for those looking to embark on the 11+. I also liked the fact, that thorough explanations for each of the 17 training sessions are provided at the back of the book. The book is comprehensive and focused in its outlook, and takes the reader regularly out of his/her comfort zones. I've found that my daughter's vocabulary is increasing at an exponential rate, and most encouraging of all, is that she is incorporating a fair sum of these words in her everyday speech and writing. I do regularly test her with these words in order that her retention rate remains high. Each training session has a uniform pattern which means the student is comfortable with the format, although the content differs enormously. Comprised within all 17 training sessions are the following sections.- Matching Words- Opposite Words- Words That Do Not Match- Odd One Out- Finding The Missing Letters- Similar relationships- Find The Missing WordIn conclusion, I like the fact that so many areas are tested - spelling, synonyms, antonyms, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, comprehension etc. Areas of concentration and focus are also explored indirectly.I've liked this book so much, that, I am eager to purchase more books from the same publisher. First up, will be the 'Eureka 11+ confidence series' which consists of exam papers covering topics such as Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning. I will then purchase the 'Numerical Reasoning:Advanced Training Workbooks' and the 'Verbal Reasoning :Advanced Training Workbooks', and finally the 'Non-Verbal reasoning:The Nonn-Verbal Ninja Training Course'. All book titles with a brief description can be found on the back cover of the '1000-word Brain Boost Part 1' book. These are excellent books which I would advocate to any parent whose child is preparing for the 11+ exam.

Giant book of many types of verbal reasoning question
Large book (more than 100 pages) containing a huge range of vocabulary training, laid out in blocks of 30 questions with multiple-choice A-E answers. In each block there is a set of Synonyms, some Antonyms, some Non Synonyms, and then some Odd-One-Out. There is then a spelling, where you have to write the missing letters: those words are quite common but generally a bit tricky to spell (e.g. absence), then an Analogy section (A is to B as C is to D), and then a long series of sentences with missing words where you choose the word that fits (Cloze).I don't see many "easy" questions, so I keep reminding my granddaughter that it says at the front that these are supposed to be difficult and teach tricky vocabulary.I do very much like the point it makes that the children should write into the space in the book a list of unfamiliar words *and* make up a sentence using them. My granddaughter enjoyed doing this, and I am sure it helps her cement their meaning. She was keen and soon exceeded the space provided. There is a lot in this book, including the explanations at the back which are quite helpful when you yourself can't work out why one answer is better than the other. While I do recommend it, I also recommend the book by Christine Draper on synonyms and antonyms which, although not so thorough in exam style or explanations, is very handbaggable: I would have given that one 6 stars if allowed.

This book is useful if you have a full year to prepare for the 11+. Initially, the exercises can be very depressing for the children, as so many of the words are unfamiliar. Over time, however, this improves as the book is gradually worked through. I would recommend this for top students only.
