Invitation to Law and Society, Second Edition: An Introduction to the Study of Real Law (Chicago Series in Law and Society)

Short, but deceptively full, book
I assigned this for an undergraduate political science class on Law and Society. Calavitta is a sociologist, and I would have liked to have had more discussion of some POLS literature for my purposes (and L&S is Interdisciplinary -- she does use lit beyond sociology), but on its own terms, it is fine. Each chapter introduces a main theory / idea and the literature that supports and challenges it. The chapters thus can be read individually, but there is a discussion that runs through the book, too. The book is both accessible for novices, and also richly nuanced and challenging for more experienced readers.

Inexpensive To Buy, Very Interesting, You Will Definitely Learn Something Easily
Absolutely loved this book. It is so inciteful and easy to understand, awhile giving important pieces of information and numerous examples to show how Law and Society are connected. I enjoyed reading this book for one of my university classes. I was happy that the book was inexpensive, so that I could buy it instead of renting it. I will definitely continue to read this book and add it as my first collection of books to keep. Simply put, this is my first time actually having a school book that I found so interesting that I was glad to have bought it. Most books I rent for school are only useful and interesting to me for a course.

Great intro book
I teach this book to my law and society undergrad students. It can be a little difficult for them to understand in the beginning because so many ideas and people are thrown at them, but as the book goes on, they get a better grasp of it & the ideas being put forth.

Good, but not well balanced.
This book was required reading in a Law & Public Policy Class. Calavita has some interesting concepts, introducing the reader to such topics as Legal Pluralism, demonstrating how law is applied differently. The main problem is the theme has an extreme liberal agenda. Some of her theories are based on opinion and not a balanced view of the facts. It's a good overview of Law and Society as that field is dominated by a liberal perspective anyway.

Pretty good book and very easy to read and not too expensive, so definitely buy it.

Not great
My book came in with crumbs all over it and in the pages. Stains and smudges all over the cover and the back of the book, does not look like a new book.
