This tread gauge is certainly far better than the cheap wooden ones available on Amazon. I was impressed by the neat storage box it came in. Although it lacked any written instructions, it was fairly intuitive to assemble and use. The use of Bakelite instead of wood for the spanning sticks is very smart as they are very rigid and durable. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that only 2 clamping blocks are included. While the clamping blocks keep the sticks from moving in and out (affecting the measured length), the sticks can move slightly up and down, affecting the accuracy of the ange at ends of the gauge. Either the clamping blocks need to be at least twice as wide to more firmly hold the sticks, or 2 additional clamping blocks, other pieces of channel material, or clamps are necessary to stabilize the sticks at 2 points along each stick to prevent "angle wobble". I used a couple of small (1.5") "C" clamps to hold the sticks firm. There's even room in the storage box to hold the small "C" clamps.All in all a great product at a great price.

Lots of options for this measuring tool, and it comes in a high-quality case as well. That will keep it all organized for years to come.
