Anything from Tuttle is top of the line!
As a former language teacher (Modern Standard Arabic and Arabic dialects) I can say that the methodology in this book is outstanding. I spoke Japanese quite well, 50 years ago(!) and wanted this book to refresh my memory before hopefully going back to visit. I will definitely be getting volume II !

Great content, wish it read right to left though
Great book, I'm using it aside Genki 1 and it's basic enough to understand but is not a bunch of redundent like a bunch of other textbooks so I'm introduced to new vocab in a funner and more interesting way then textbook style.4 stars only because it is "manga" and Japanese learning I wish it went right to left to get people use to how books are read in Japan, especially since I've started to read Japanese only books, so it feels a little bit unnatural as a Japanese manga.

Son was so excited …
My son has wanted to travel to Japan since he was 7 years old. He in fact joined the Air Force just so he could live there for a while (but also as a patriot who wanted help paying for education!) We gave this to him for Christmas and he was so stoked! He said it was awesome in that it creates a story line so you can see how the words are used irl. Very impressed. He took it on the plane instead of packing it 👍🏼

So I like this book but..
My biggest issue with most japanese learning books (this one is no acception) is that they shove kanji down your throat right off the bat.My issue with this is even in Japan they don't start learning SIMPLE kanji until 6-12 years of age. While you might think so?They learn hiragana and katakana first.Trying to learn 3 letter sets at one time is hard for beginners. Finding out how many kanji their are AND they can be pronounced more than one way depending on how its used its a bit much.I 100% kanji needs to be learned but maybe not RIGHT away. You need to learn to walk before you can run.Other than that this book is fun to use. The manga parts are a little out there but it's still fun to read.

Glad I got this book!
Really will help us enjoy Japanese comics. Smart. I like Tuttle books anyway and this is one of their new offerings. Really a fun hobby-type book.
