Pretty Pictures, Informative Text
My children all really liked reading this book when we used it in a unit study recently. All ages enjoyed it, from the 18-month old up to the 9-year old. They begged me to read more, but I succeeded in splitting it up for different lessons. The children learned many facts about the bees and we even used the pictures to imitate in our art projects. Now, let me say, it does contain a bit more about the birds and "the bees," ahem, then I was willing to read to my little ones, so I omitted some of the information about the drones mating with the queen. Many children's non-fiction books are good about not going into detail about it and I thought this one was too detailed. All in all, it was fascinating reading and really complemented our unit study.

Bee Book
I and my children learned some things about how a bee hive works so, I'd say that this book was worth reading.Be aware that there is mention of the queen bee and the drone mating. If you're not ready enter the topic of reproduction with your child you should know that a sentence or two about this is in this book.Nothing too explicit is mentioned in reference to mating but, I'd suggest that you look through the text before reading it aloud to make a decision. It's easy enough to creatively pass over this section until a more appropriate time for you and your child if necessary or it can be just the entry point to open up discussions on reproduction that you might have been or (will soon) be looking for.To me, the colors used in the book are not all that spectacular- lots of browns and yellows but, the drawings were well done. It's a nice enough book to own.

Bees
I am always on the look-out for non-fiction books that are written at a level that my second graders can understand. This was perfect. It has wonderful illustrations of the hive and has good information written at an appropriate level. My students will enjoy it.
